Things are different these days.
That’s for sure. Often times I get perplexed looks from parents or people of my generation when I explain that I am a senior portrait specialist.
What does that even mean? In my day, and possibly yours, senior pictures were something you did one afternoon in the high school cafeteria or gym. It took all of 20 minutes. Everyone got the exact same set of pictures. Why do you need a specialist for that?
Well, first you need to realize a couple things.
- Senior Portraits aren’t REALLY about graduating from high school. They are about the end of childhood and the beginning of adulthood. They are about transitions. Statistically, for most people, their senior portraits will be the last time they are professionally photographed until they get MARRIED.
- Senior portraits tend to stay in your family for a long time. Like, generations long time. They are not only going to be seen by all your family and friends now, but by your children and grandchildren too.
- Most mass produced senior pictures are basically just the same school pictures you’ve had since kindergarten, only with different clothes and way more expensive!
So, what do we do that’s different? Here’s how I explain it to our clients.
Imagine
Imagine, for some reason, your 17 year old kid suddenly became famous! Don’t laugh, it could happen.
Let’s say your kid is now famous and the world hungers to know more about them. Now imagine a major fashion / lifestyle magazine, say Teen Vogue” or the like, decides they are going to write a feature about them to “tell their story.” To show the world who they are, and how they came to be who they are.
Imagine they fly in a top photographer from NY, or LA, or London to spend some time photographing your kid in order to illustrate the story and to show the world what they're all about.
Think for a moment about what those pictures might look like. Hard to do of course, because every photographer has their own unique style and way of seeing.
But I can promise they definitely would not look like these!
Not that there is anything WRONG with these. They’re nice enough pictures. But they tell you absolutely NOTHING about the kids portrayed, except perhaps that they had a good orthodontist. They are sterile. Soulless.
Yet, this is exactly what 95% of high school seniors settle for as the legacy of their journey into adulthood.
When they leave for college or whatever life holds for them beyond high school and there is no more Beth or Joey in the house, these photos will do little to remind you of the times when the house was a little less... empty.
They won't tell future generations anything about them!
We approach senior portraits very differently.
We take our inspiration from that magazine photographer who will employ their talents to create a series of images that will show not only what you child looked like at 17, but WHO THEY WERE.
Naturally, this takes a lot more effort, and costs more, than a 15 minute photo shoot in the school auditorium. And it’s not for everyone. We get that. We can’t possibly photograph everyone anyway. Wouldn’t want to.
But for those that appreciate and value the difference we offer, we promise a fun experience and images you will LOVE and TREASURE forever. We are willing to invest the time, effort, and creative energy it takes to do more than ordinary senior portraits.
We do EXTRAordinary!
